Some of these are technical such as ever increasing maintenance problems or hardware obsolescence but more frequently it is commercial pressures such as opening up new opportunities, responding to changing end-user needs, or reducing the productions costs of their systems. They know they need to port their application but the top priority is getting the next release out on time, that’s why they come to Pebble Bay to plan, manage and execute their application port. Our long-standing experience working with embedded systems means our customers know they will get a team that understands the underlying commercial needs as well as having the necessary technical skills and expertise to deliver a challenging project on time and within budget.
Your engineering team is a talented group of people and no doubt thought carefully about platform independence and porting issues when they designed version 1.0 of your application. They designed in an OS or hardware abstraction layer to make porting a simple job. However, they know that as timescales and budgets were trimmed compromises had to be made: implicit assumptions about the current platform went into the design and the boundary between the platform and the core application code became blurred.
We will work closely with you and your team to understand why you are porting your software to a new platform, determine how much to keep unchanged and how much to modify or re-write from scratch. We understand the technical issues that will undoubtedly be part of the project such as:
